There will be some more coming. Enjoy!  And remember, save the date, June 12, 2010!  It's going to be a great event.

Bake Sale For Haiti Recap by Thomas Nguyen

Today was the Bake Sale for Haiti.   Over 23 food bloggers dedicated their time and effort to bake goods to fundraise for Doctors Without Borders.  In just 2 hours of selling, they raised $950. If they were able to sell longer, I'm sure they would have been able to raise even more! Anything that wasn't sold in time was donated to another great organization, N Street Village.  Congratulations to everyone for organizing a wonderful event!  Enjoy the recap video and photos.  DC Food Bloggers.. you can visit my photo gallery and steal whatever photos you need for your website!

Ping Pong. Who would have known? by Thomas Nguyen

Last Thursday, I was in LA for a day for some meetings and a pre-Oscar party hosted by Susan Surandon and SPiN NYC. I had a great time meeting friends and people I never ever thought I would meet.  I wake up everyday amazed by my line of profession.  Ping Pong.  Life is good. Enjoy the video recap above and some photos below and in the gallery!

Fete of Fashion by Thomas Nguyen

It's interesting what random meetings can happen to you.  One day a couple of friends and I were heading down to the city.  While we were at the metro, we ran into two girls who had some questions about which metro stop to get off of to the event they were attending.  We were able to help them out and ended up chit chatting on the ride down.  We kept in touch and learned that we all follow a passion to give back to our communities.

The one girl's name is Tu-Anh.  She started a non profit called Fashion Fix, where they use the avenues of fashion and art events to raise funds and awareness to a local cause.  The event that just happened was named Fete of Fashion.  The proceeds benefited the Capital Breast Care Center, which is a DC center that helps screens women for breast cancer, no matter if they are able to pay or not.  Michelle Fenty made a guest appearance that night and spoke for the CBCC. Fashion Fix was able to raise over $3,000 that night for the center. Great job Tu-Anh & the Fashion Fix Team!

Techniquelle Recap | More community work by Thomas Nguyen

Techniquelle

I just got back from Techniquelle's performance @ DC Wonderland Ballroom. It was great to hear her live with a band.  Even though she said her voice was giving out, I don't think anyone noticed any signs of that while she was singing.  We got to hear some unreleased tracks tonight which sounded great!  Again, check her out at her website, http://www.techniquellemusic.com.  Also I wanted to note that East Coast Caravan had some really great instrumentals.  They totally got the place jammin and ready for Techniquelle & Band.  Check them out at http://www.myspace.com/eastcoastcaravan More photos in the photo section to the right!

More community work

So my ever so cool cousin Sylvie, Thrifty DC Cook, is a local foodie.  Not only does she love to learn, taste, and make great food, she also gives back to the community with food!  She takes the time to gather food or money contributions and volunteers to make some great food for local food banks.  This Saturday, she will be working with N Street Village in DC. This will be the first time I finally get to help out my cousin, so I'm excited! The food will feed women who are homeless and are recovering from addiction or a mental illness. We'll be at the Bethany Women's Center, 1333 N St. NW, Washington, DC 2005 at 10AM this Saturday to start prepping and will serve lunch at 12 noon.  The lunch will end at 12:30.  If you would like to help or contribute or learn about future events, please send me an email and I'll forward it on to Sylvie! Or simply visit her site and send her a note. http://www.thriftydccook.com

Also, I'm sure everyone knows about the devastating earthquake in Haiti.  I ask you to please donate whatever you can at this time to help out with the relief efforts.  Even if it's a couple of bucks... it all adds up!  So before you buy that next pack of gum, movie ticket, another round of drinks, try to remember how just sacrificing something so small like that can help out so many in Haiti right now.  Some great organizations you can donate to is Yele, Wyclef Jean's organization that benefits Haiti, The Red Cross, and also One Day's Wages.

Helping Hands Event & Techniquelle by Thomas Nguyen

This past Saturday was the first ever Helping Hands event (www.helpinghandsevent.com). It was originally scheduled for December but a big ole snow storm had something to say about that.  It was a shame, but at the same time I was glad.  I was away for business during that time and was bummed out I was going to make it!  If you didn't know, the Helping Hands Event benefited a great organization known as One Day's Wages.  When you get the chance, please visit their website (www.onedayswages.org)

Anyways, the event was rescheduled for this past Saturday and it was even bigger and better. Originally I wasn't sure how long I was going to stay, but I ended up staying the majority of the time and had a blast. I brought my camera along and was able to help take some photos for the event.  The turnout was great and the musicians were awesome.  Everyone had a great performance and I was fortunate to learn about some new and great local artists. I'm sure that One Day's Wages are extremely proud of the work Jennie Roh & Joe Kim have done.  I believe this is just the beginning of even more amazing events to come.

So the next event that you all need to check out is Techniquelle's performance, this Wednesday, January 13th, 2010.  She will be performing at the DC Wonderland Ballroom at 9PM. Her music is soooo good.  Chickity Check it out! http://techniquelle.squarespace.com/music/

If you don't know, now ya know! by Thomas Nguyen

My cousin the Thrifty DC Cook! Ready to roll out the deals!

I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful new year!  2010 has started amazingly.  I had a wonderful time hanging out with my home girl Jenn at my cousin Sylvie's NYE bash! Her and her friends made some amazing food for the party, which I was very happy to eat! Thrifty DC Cook knows how to throw some fun get togethers!  And also today, Penn State won the Captial One Bowl so I am a super happy camper! And I'm happy that OSU won in the Rose Bowl as well.  GO BIG 10!

So a new year, a new decade and new events! Here are some upcoming events that I believe you should check out!

Pass It On by Thomas Nguyen

For all you local DC'ers, here are some events that I would be checking out if I could make it. Don't miss out!

Jay Sean @ Josephines
Tuesday, 12/12/09

The new hit star Jay Sean will be at Joesphines tomorrow for a meet and greet.  The tickets are $30 for a meet and greet with Jay Sean and an autographed copy of his latest album, "All or Nothing".  Also, Jay Sean's official DJ, DJ Bikram will be there.  If you don't know Bikram, he is one of the hottest DJ's in the DC area.  Every time I get to listen to one of his sets live, it's electrifying.  He always seems to mix the perfect blend of House, Hip Hop and mashups. Many of my friends who are only hip hop fans and have this anti stereotype of house music are totally blown away by a night of his mixing.  The man simply knows how to keep the crowd rockin!

Helping Hands Event @ Photoria
Saturday, 12/19/09

Photography + Music + Charitable Events = Awesomeness.  That's the simple description of this event hosted by my friend Jennie.  Join her and many others at Photoria for a photography and music showcase, where the proceeds will go towards One Day Wages.  This organization is a great movement to help end world hunger.  If you can't go, show some of your holiday love and donate to the organization!

Techniquelle @ DC9 and Solly's
Saturday, 12/13/09 and 12/14/09

Listen to this wonderful local artist, Techniquelle live at DC9 And Solly's.  I was lucky enough to catch her live at the grand opening of BBQ Chicken & Beer and have been hooked!  Definitely an artist worth checking out. I'll eventually catch another show!
